Christmas Wishes from Drain Doctor & Some Top Festive Drainage Tips
You know what we like more than anything over the festive period? A nice glass of port accompanied by a few Christmas drainage tips – there really is nothing like it, particularly with a few carols for good measure.
We’ve had a fantastic year here at Drain Doctor, providing an emergency plumbing, blocked drain and drain repair service that reaches more parts of the Anglian region than any other. And while you’re getting ready for the Christmas break, we’re gearing up for one of our busiest periods, as sinks around the East of England are subject to more fat, grease and oil than at any other time of year.
Thankfully, we provide a 24/7 emergency service, even during the Christmas period, so if your drains do become blocked as a result of all that delicious food you’ve been eating, we are on hand to help. However, we are also partial to a bit of time off ourselves, so here are our top drainage tips to keep your Christmas blockage free.
Festive fat build-ups
The problem of sink and sewage blockages is made much worse at this time of year thanks to the huge amount, in fact an estimated 250 tonnes worth, of leftover fat that gets poured down the drains. The result is nasty smells, overflowing drains and flooding, which is probably not the kind of surprise you want at Christmas.
The trouble is that after cooking that great big bird, excess oil, lard and grease is often poured straight down the sink. Initially, these waste products are in liquid form, but they quickly solidify when they come into contact with cold sewer walls. The result is the creation of vast fat deposits that cannot be destroyed.
So what are our top tips for your drain’s fat-free Christmas?
– Empty all leftover food into the bin – not down the drain!
– Pour waste oil and fat into a suitable container before throwing it into the bin
– Give any fatty pans, crockery or tins a wipe with a cloth or kitchen towel before loading the dishwasher or doing the washing up
– Use strainers in the sink plughole to stop food remains going down the drain
– Do not sweep any waste into floor drains; instead, put all your rubbish in the bin
And there you have it, five simple changes that could prevent a Christmas callout and keep our engineers in the comfort of their armchairs this year!
All that’s left is to wish you a happy Christmas and a fantastic New Year!
