What is a septic tank?
Most sewage discharged in the UK passes into the drains. It is processed in central treatment plants, usually run by the local water company. Occasionally, normally because of the location of a property, it is necessary to retain the solid sewage on site and remove it in bulk for processing. This is usually done with an underground septic tank.
How does a septic tank work?
A septic tank works on the basis of bacterial action breaking down the solids – a process known as anaerobic decomposition. This solid is removed periodically, while the treated, semi-purified water passes into a soak-away or ‘leach field’ for safe dispersal through the surrounding soil.
How often should a septic tank be emptied?
It is recommended a well designed 1,000 gallon septic tank should be pumped and emptied every 4-5 years. However, this number changes based on tank size, condition of the tank and how many people are using it.
